Abstract

This essay makes a critical survey of the figure of Ignacia Jasso in the ballad corpus, History and popular culture of the region of Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, Texas. Better known as “La Nacha”, since the death of her husband Ignacia Jasso came to occupy a predominant place in the criminal life, first of her region and then nationally and even internationally. As a personal enemy of Harry Anslinger, the first American drug czar, Jasso also became the first woman requested in extraction by the United States government. As far as I could investigate, La Nacha appears in three corridos. She is mentioned in two corridos dedicated to her husband, Pablo González, nicknamed "El Pablote". Ignacia is also mentioned in “El corrido del hampa”, a ballad with multiple protagonists that narrates a survey, an overflight of the criminal element in the Ciudad Juarez of the late 1920s and early next decade.
